Militias were once social centers for good ol' boys with a strong sense of gun love. Ignored by the mainstream press until the Oklahoma bombing, they were free to dress in army surplus gear and shoot off guns in the swamps of Florida or the mountains of Colorado. Now the more colorful members of the militia realize that being on TV doesn't do too much other than get you a fat FBI file.
Divisive, unruly and as media savvy as Reggie Jackson they quickly were demonized and ostracized. Given a few more long necks and a couple of pinches of Skoal, the more colorful and mercenary of the bunch could come up with coherent political agenda. But that is just the cartoon version the Feds would like you to believe. Militias are a very pervasive and deep rooted movement in areas where hard times, dull headed governments and jackboot agencies exist. As one militia leader told DP, "You are not going to see a real militia man on TV, but we're here . . . waiting."
The point is that militias don't exist to sell videotapes, parade around in designer cammo and fondle guns. The mainstay of the American militia movement is the same lifeblood that thumped King John, tossed the British under King George and will become vocal when our government forgets that. Are they the enemy? It depends which side you are on. If you live inside the Beltway or drive a Volvo you just might be.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has identified 440 self-proclaimed antigovernment militias. And they've infested every state in the union. The government calls them "Internet commandos," but is taking them quite seriously (see "The Babylonians"). Currently, there are 24 states where the higher-profile militias are in operation. California, Arizona, Nevada and Colorado make up the South/Western area while the Southeastern area includes Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Missouri, North Carolina and Virginia. There is also a Northeastern area that is composed of New York, New Hampshire, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Wisconsin. There is no accurate count of exactly how many people belong to militias.
It is interesting to note that many of the militia groups are growing in popularity, thanks to Janet Reno and the use of tanks and military forces against the Branch Davidians and the general isolation of a Washington-based government. The most well-known militias in the good ol' U.S.A. are the following:
