So what do you get for $242 billion a year? We are heading for a total armed forces of 1.4 million and downsizing in toys. Right now we have 95,000 troops in place in Korea and Japan and another 230,000 in the NATO countries. It looks like the new kinder, gentler military will shake out to be as follows. The Army gets a chintzy $71 billion to train, house and feed 797,000 troops. The Air Force gets $83 billion and runs ten active and five reserve tactical fighter wings, totaling 1,500 planes and 300 large transport planes, and finally the Navy burns up $87 billion a year to run 451 surface ships and 14 aircraft carrier battle groups.
