This remote, rugged and mountainous state breeds individualism, for sure, but it also produces a disproportionate share of mental cases and whackos. Some of these folks have just been in the woods too long and eaten too many squirrels. Even the militia in Montana tell us that Montana has its unfair share of colorful folks. Montana is the home of the suspected Unabomber, Theodore Kaczynski, who was busted by the feds April 3, 1996, in his remote Montana cabin. The Unabomber killed three people and injured 23 during a 17-year mail bombing spree. Montana is also the home of extremist militiaman John Trochmann (see "Militia of Montana" below), as well as Terry Nichols of Oklahoma City blast fame. And the state is the base for a bunch of zanies who go by the handle "Freemen" (they're not free any longer). These guys, devout white supremacist Christians who reject government authority, refuse to pay taxes and like to write bad checks. On March 25, 1996, a standoff began in Jordan, Montana, between 20 armed Freemen and more than 100 FBI agents after two of the Freemen's leaders were jailed over a $1.8 million fraudulent check scheme, the theft of television equipment and for threatening a federal judge. Even former Green Beret and borderline fascist James "Bo" Gritz couldn't negotiate this wolfpack's surrender. Even Trochman and his MOM get foamy at the mouth when DP calls to say hi. Toss in another chunk of meat.
