Americans own more than 6.7 million handguns (200 million of all types of guns), and aren't afraid to use them. About one-quarter of all American adults own a firearm. On a typical day, one million adults in the United States are packing heat and another two million have a gun in their car. Firearms send almost 40,000 Americans to their graves each year. The deaths and injuries from shootings aren't all borne of malice. In the last year, an Indiana woman fired a .410-gauge shotgun at her foot to remove a callus. A Kentucky man shot himself in the chest "to see what it felt like," he told paramedics. An Oklahoma man got hit with the ricochet after convincing a buddy the best way to kill a millipede crossing a sidewalk is with a .22-caliber rifle. Meanwhile, in Wyoming, a House committee approved a bill that would lower the minimum age for big-game hunters to 12.
