While large trucks make up only 3 percent of all registered vehicles in the United States, they account for 21 percent of all deaths in crashes involving two or more vehicles. In 1995, accidents involving heavy trucks killed 4,903 people and injured 116,000. That makes for an average of 13 deaths every day in truck crashes. Twelve of the thirteen victims are occupants of passenger cars.
