According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, in 1993, AIDS surpassed accidents as the leading cause of death for Americans between 24 and 44 years old. For every 100,000 people, about 35 die of AIDS, about 32 die in accidents. There are 275,000 adults living with HIV in the United States. There are 4,500 children under 13 with the virus.
