San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge has the dubious distinction of being the most popular bridge for death. The Golden Gate Bridge District is finally getting around to considering a US$3 million steel wire fence to be erected across the bridge's span as a suicide barrier. More than 1,000 people have leapt to their deaths from the bridge since 1937, the year it opened.
