Uganda - Allied Democratic Forces (ADF)

These guys are Sudan-backed Muslim nasties formed from the radical Muslim sect Salaf Tabliq, the West Nile Bank Front (WNBF) and what's left of the National Army for the Liberation of Uganda (NALU; see below), and secessionist Rwenzururu movement. They operate out of the cool green mountains in Southwestern Uganda and they are trying to carve a niche for themselves along the Congo border. The ADF has been attempting to destabilize the Museveni regime since its beginning in the spring of 1996. They launched their first attack on Uganda from the Congo on November 16, 1996. The group first appeared in the southwestern part of the country (where it doesn't seem to enjoy a lot of support) and has been the meatiest insurgent cell to make an appearance on the Ugandan rebel landscape since 1994. The ADF is estimated to have between 600 and 1,000 members, recruiting mainly from among the Hutu Rwandan Army and from late President Mobutu Sese Seko's Forces Armees Zaireoises. They also like to snatch children and press gang villagers. Most of the clashes between the ADF and government forces have been occurring in and around the towns of Bundibugyo, Bumbombi, Kabarole and Kabunomi. And, true to form, most of the casualties have been civilians. Between 5,000 and 10,000 Ugandan villagers have fled across the border in the former Zaire to escape the fighting-only to find renewed fighting there between Ugandan troops and Congolese government troops loyal to Laurent Kabila. They are based in the southwestern area of Uganda in Ruwenzori mountains, Bundibugyo district but are also active in Kampala and other urban areas.
