Uganda has a population of about 21 million people. The capital is Kampala, with a population of 800,000. The climate is tropical with hot lowland areas and cooler temperatures in the mountains.
The official language is English, but you'll also hear a lot of Swahili spoken. There are another 30 indigenous languages, the most common is Luganda. About two-thirds of the Ugandan people are Christians, while Islam makes up about 16 percent of the population.
The Ugandan currency is the Ugandan shilling (UGs1,000 = US$1). Credit cards are accepted at the major hotels, but not in the boonies. Banking hours are 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Don't expect cash machines to work. The phone lines are intermittent. Business hours are 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 2-5 p.m. Telephone and fax services are available in the main towns. The IDD code for Uganda is +256. Uganda is on GMT+3. Electrical supply is generally 220V/50C. Ugandans drive on the left-hand side of the road.
