Kampala is relatively safe, but outside the capital is a war zone. LRA guerrillas control the roads north of Kampala at night, and bandits those to the southwest. Teams of LRA rebels regularly ambush convoys to the north and have even tried to take the key northern city of Gulu. Ask local bus drivers in Kampala what is going on. Those burnt patches on the road used to be their coworkers and former passengers.
