The Karimojong live in the northeastern part of the country, and at some point, got the idea in their heads that all cattle in the region belong to them. Their god-given right is backed by their Russian-made guns. On April 10, 1998, 11 people were whacked when two truckloads of AK-47-toting Karimojong raided a village in Mbale district. And cattle rustlers from Kenya are making life miserable for ranchers in the east. In one attack in May 1997, rustlers from Kenya killed 76 Ugandan villagers, including 50 children, as they made off with 300 head of cattle. More and more Ugandans in the northeast are asking themselves, "Where's the beef?"
