The Alevis are a Muslim minority who live in central Turkey but are unrelated to both the Shiites, who consider Ali to be the successor to Mohammed, or to the ruling Syrian Alawite faction. They adhere to a moderate branch of Islam started in the 13th century by philosopher Bektas Veli. Occasionally, there are violent demonstrations and riots in the Istanbul and Ankara areas. In March 1995, 16 people were killed in two days of riots.
