The local currency is the Turkish lira, a limp currency that makes you an instant millionnaire each time you exchange about 15 bucks. Turkey has high plateaus and Mediterranean coastal areas. The plateau areas in the east get very cold in the winter and very hot in the summer. The fall and spring are quite pleasant. Istanbul has moderate temperatures year-round, with summer temps in the 80s (F) and winter lows in the mid 40s (F). Istanbul gets about four inches of rain a month in the winter.
The bulk of tourists in Turkey are Russians, attracted by the proximity, beaches and cheap goods. Germans comprise the second-largest bloc, followed by tourists from England, Romania and Israel.
