This can be a hazardous profession in Turkey, where papers are regularly closed down, editors fined and journos occasionally disappear. Although there is no prior censorship of newspapers in Turkey, it is illegal to publish anything that is deemed to advocate separatism or insults either Ataturk or the military. The punishment can range from fines or closure of the newspaper to imprisonment. Pro-Kurdish newspapers such as Ozgur Gundem have been closed and a number of hacks shoved in the clink for such offenses.
