01/28/82The Turkish consul general to the U.S. was assassinated in Los Angeles by members of a group calling itself the Justice Commandos for the Armenian Genocide.
03/10/79The death of Kurdish leader Mullah Mustafa Barzani (Kurdish regions only).
03/12/1880Birthday of Kemal Ataturk, founder of the modern Turkish state.
03/16/21Signing of the Soviet-Turkish border treaty that ended Armenian hopes of establishing an independent state.
03/21Kurdish New Year.
04/17/92Turkish police killed 11 suspected Kurdish guerrillas in a series of raids in Istanbul. Kurds undertook several terrorist attacks in 1992 in Germany and Turkey citing this date.
04/24/15Armenians observe this date as the anniversary of the alleged 1915 Turkish genocide of Armenians.
04/25/88Hagop Hagopian, leader of the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia (ASALA)--aka the Orly group, 3rd October Organization--was shot dead in his home in Athens by two gunmen. No group claimed responsibility for his murder.
05/01/77More than 30 leftists were killed during clashes with security forces in Istanbul.
05/27/91May 27, 1991, was celebrated as Constitution Day and made an official Turkish holiday.
06/16June 16 is the anniversary date of the founding of the Turkish leftist terrorist group, 16 June. Until 1987, the group acted under the name Partisan Yolu. Since 1987, the group has claimed responsibility for numerous acts of terrorism, including the December 1989 firebombing in Istanbul of the Hiawatha, a U.S. Government-owned yacht.
08/07/82Nine people, including one American, were killed, and more than 70 were wounded in an attack on the Ankara airport by the Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia.
