Tajikistan is a poor country where 90 percent of food and all fuel is donated by aid groups. The average wage is $5 a day and that's if you can find a job. Tajikistan is a low budget wasteland where a downsized Russian army can still afford to play the Great Game. Russia's army has also provided a high speed pipeline for heroin and hashish straight to Moscow via Spetnaz 'R' Us overnight military cargo service. The ruling clan is simply government de jour, but the Russians call the shots and pay a lot of bills here. For now the only tourist attractions are a ring of armed border forts manned by 25,000 Russian soldiers, weekly firefights with Afghan smugglers and Tajik rebels.
