Tajikistan - Getting Sick

Tajikistan has malaria in the southern and lower regions. The water supply is not potable and bottled water should be your only source. Hepatitis A is a risk. Ticks are found in higher elevations in grassy and wooded areas. Rabies is a significant risk from local dogs, many of which are trained to attack strangers. Add meningitis, tuberculosis, schistosomiasis and typhoid (Dushanbe and south) to your disease list.

There has been a significant deterioration in the medical infrastructure in Tajikistan with many trained personnel having fled the country after the recent kidnappings. Tajikistan has a general scarcity of medical equipment and medicines. The potential exists for significant disease outbreaks, because of massive population displacement and a partial breakdown in immunization activities.
