Tajikistan - Getting Out

You can't take any antiques out of the country. That, of course, is the least of your worries. Antiques could be anything from the phone system to the political philosophy of the current rulers. You are also not allowed to take any local currency out. Again, this won't be too much of a problem since there is not much call for Tajik rubles in the cafes of Paris. The only place you might run into a customs person would be at the border with Kyrgyzstan. Needless to say, the border with Afghanistan is more concerned about folks trying to sneak in at night with rocket launchers and trucks full of opium. The only thing you should concern yourself with is how to get out of this godforsaken place with Afghan fighters to the south, mountains to the north and a whole lot of Central Asia to the north and west. Tajikistan is a long way from anywhere. The only thing your credit cards will be good for is scraping the ice off the dilapidated truck's windshield and your travelers checks will make good kindling on those nights in the mountain passes.

If you hire a driver to take you to Uzbekistan, remember that you may have to change cars at the border since the Uzbeks often do not let Tajik tagged cars in.
