There have been over 500 eyewitness accounts of the alma or the almasty in Tajikistan. The almasty is Tajikistan's version of the yeti (or "that thing") and is said to be about 6 feet, 6 inches, weigh in at about 500 lbs. and walk on two legs. The man/animal has reddish-brown fur and can move along the ground at up to 40 mph. They root for berries, amphibians and rodents. They are seen at night and run away when spotted. Alma youngsters look just like human babies except smaller.
Some scientists say they are Neanderthals driven into the wilderness by our ancestors, the Cro Magnons. Others say they are a result of active imaginations. But somewhere on the "Roof of the World" exists a large hairy creature. Is it dangerous? Not really. It is said that it will attack pack animals and scream a lot. There are ancient stories of similar creatures from Oregon to Chechnya to Mongolia to Borneo. So why not be the first one on your block to have a pet alma?
