Tajikistan started printing its own version of the ruble in 1995. Remember that the lowly Tajik ruble is only worth 100 Russian rubles. You get about 400 rubles for a U.S. dollar. Needless to say, napkins and coasters might retain their value longer than this creative solution to insolvency. You can't take money out of the country. Credit cards are useless. Banks have no idea what a traveler's check is. Needless to say, the almighty dollar is good as gold here, but you will need Tajik rubles to buy airline tickets in country. Don't take or accept 100 dollar bills before 1993 because of the high amount of bogus Iranian printed C notes. Worst case is that money changers will discount your ragged greenbacks for up to 25 percent of their value. The locals pay a much lower price for just about everything, and if you get caught hiring a local to buy your tickets, you will get dunned for the difference or a bribe.
