When there is air service, the chances of crashing are good in Tajikistan. The Russians pay their pilots an additional sum to make the 45 minute flight between Dushanbe and Khorog-white knuckle flying at its finest. The high altitude prevents the aircraft from passing gracefully over some of the highest mountains in Russia. So the pilots simply fly in around, and by the peaks. You should know that you are flying over (or rather through) an active war zone (Yeah I know everyone's signed off on a peace treaty), and one unlucky flight was downed by Tajik rebels using a surface-to-air missile. You can call the London office of Tajikistan International Airlines (we're pretty sure they're not that busy) at Tel.: (0181) 993-8885, Fax: 993-7504.
