The capital city of Dushanbe (Tajik for Monday, the day of the weekly market) is a dangerous place due to street crime and violence after dark. It's only three hours by tank from the Afghan border. Westerners are targeted not only in public, but in their hotel rooms. Even armed soldiers stay off the streets at night. UN vehicles have been hijacked in daylight. Bombings are frequent within the city. Call the U.S. embassy in Dushanbe for the latest: [7] (3772) 21-03-56.
