Sudan - National Democratic Alliance (NDA)

The NDA is an awkward coalition between the SPLA and eight Muslim-based parties: the DUP, Umma, Legitimate Command, the Beja Congress, Alliance of Trade Unions, Alliance of Forces, the Federal Party and the Communist Party, all of which not only supported the imposition of Shari'a on the south, but also opposed southern autonomy or secession prior to the 1989 coup. For the Muslim members, many of whom were jailed or exiled by the NIF, the alliance gives them military muscle. Given that the Prophet Mohamed forbade Muslims fighting Muslims, the alliance provides the SPLA with a crucial shield against the involvement of most Muslim countries-Iran and Iraq being the exceptions-on the side of Khartoum in its declared jihad against the infidel southerners. The SPLA's stunning military success in 1997 also prompted mass defections of Muslim Popular Defense Force units to John Garang. Inasmuch as the SPLA (under the banner of the "New Sudan Brigade") provides over 95 percent of the NDA combatants, Garang heads the Joint Military Command of the NDA. His growing popularity and military might saw him named at a recent NDA conference in Asmara as the possible next president of all Sudan.
