he Horn of Africa is buzzing with spies from the French DGSE, the American Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and the British MI6. Regardless of the latest political makeover of this war, there is no denying that a war for liberation between the south and the north has been fought since 1956, when Sudan gained its independence. The SPLA is the latest name under which the south has been fighting. It has undergone a power struggle, and the north is content to let the two subfactions try to kill each other. The government of the north has little jurisdiction in the south. The provinces of Upper Nile, Equatoria and Bahr el Ghazal are controlled by the SPLA. Sudan is trying to distance itself from Iran. With the recent serving up of Carlos and the flurry of media interviews that al-Turabi has given, things may be changing.
