The United States bombed the al-Shifa medicine factory in August 1998. After the owner decided to sue, the White House quietly unfroze $15 million of the Salah Idris' assets and sheepishly admits that maybe it made a mistake. Idris wants the United States to recover the $30 million it will cost to rebuild the pharmaceutical plant. The United States bombed the plant because they maintained it had links to bin Laden and manufactured the chemical used to make VX nerve gas. Idris has said the plant made medicines, including treatments for malaria and tuberculosis.
