Medical facilities are limited-you'll find one doctor and 27 hospital beds for every 10,000 people. Doctors and hospitals often expect immediate cash payment for health services. Malaria is prevalent in many areas outside of Colombo. Visitors must take precautions against malaria, hepatitis and yellow fever prior to arriving in Sri Lanka. Rabies is common in many animals in Sri Lanka; take some comfort that the painful injections against rabies can be obtained locally.
