The Sea Tigers (the marine version of the LTTE) operate small gunboats to conduct naval- and marine-style raids. Each boat usually carries five or six guerrillas. When DP used these boats in the Jaffna Lagoon to visit the Tigers, the boat in front of us was blown from the water by a naval shell. Usually, though, the high-speed boats manage to outrun the slower naval gunners. About 40 of these mini-warships are based on an island just off the coast of the rebel-held town of Mullaittivu.
