The Sri Lanka government officially outlawed the LTTE after a devastating January 1998 truck bomb attack on the holiest Buddhist shrine on the island, the Temple of the Tooth, in Kandy. Sixteen people were killed and the temple so badly damaged, it made Angkor Wat in Cambodia look like Reverend Robert Schuller's Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California. England's Prince Charles, who was to attend a ceremony at the Temple of the Tooth, had to high-tail it back to Colombo, not that he was really any safer there.
