This is a 55-mile stretch of roadway under LTTE control that would link Colombo with the Jaffna peninsula if the government forces could just get their hands on it. For now, government troops on the Jaffna peninsula can be reinforced and resupplied only by air and sea. A fierce government offensive to seize control of the Vavuniya-Kilinochchi road began in May 1997 (involving some 20,000 Sri Lankan soldiers, supported by warplanes, chopper gunships, tanks and artillery) and dissolved in 1998 after the LTTE's capture of Kilinochchi.
