In retreating from their stronghold at Jaffna in November 1995, LTTE Tigers booby-trapped virtually the entire city with trip-wired antitank and antipersonnel mines. Anything that could be picked up-from books to cooking utensils to clothes on the floor-were booby-trapped by the fleeing rebels. The city's population plummeted from 120,000 to a mere 6,000 in just a few short weeks. Like Paris in August-with land mines.
