Sri Lanka - Tamil Eelam

The place they are fighting over. The island of Ceylon or Sri Lanka was originally divided between two distinct kingdoms. The Tamil Kingdom in the north and the Sinhala kingdom in the South. The British lumped them together and adminsitered them both from the capital of Colombo. When Ceylon was given its independence, the control of the entire island was handed to the Sinhalese government in1948. The same thing happened when the Americans bundled the Moros into the Philippine government after World War II and Kashmir along with India, etc., etc. So now you get the whole point. The Sinhalese called the place Sri Lanka and the Tamils call their homeland Tamil Eelam. There is also linkage with the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
