These obscure, traditional hunters from the south and east of Sierra Leone have been thrown into the conflict, as well. But no one can quite figure out which side they're on. The hunters, originally hired by local chieftains to protect their villages from RUF attacks and considered a militia of the government army, have been throwing sticks and stones at both sides using crude, homemade rifles. But there's no doubt about it; these are nasty folks to deal with. They're making a reputation for themselves through summary execution of RUF rebels they capture and by kidnapping aide workers for ransom. They accuse government troops of pillaging and plundering civilian property and blaming it on the rebels. For now the Kamajors control large parts of the outlying jungles and are siding with Kabbah. Allegedly whipped into shape by EO/Sandlines they were instrumental in helping ECOMOG take out Koroma's junta in February 1998.
