This totally unknown army major seized power in May 1997 and charted Sierra Leone toward more squalor after having just gotten out of jail for a previous coup attempt. Koroma invited RUF leader Foday Sankoh into his cabinet and declared the army would be running the government until 2001. That didn't sit well with the Nigerians who were contemplating invading SL in earnest. Peace talks in Abidjan were quashed in August 1997 after Koroma's announcement of "four more years" for the soldier-boys, and his government began to implode. ECOMOG kicked ass, and by February 1998, Johnny was just another ex-president, one of enough in Sierra Leone to fill out the cut in a celebrity charity golf tournament. Koroma joined Sankoh's boys back in the jungle, and while he didn't appear on The Price Is Right in Lome, he definitely was pulling some strings. Now he is back in the government and in charge of making sure the integration of the rebels with the government goes peacefully.
