Rwanda - Getting Sick

Medical facilities, doctors and supplies are dangerously scarce in Rwanda. There is one doctor for every 33,170 people under normal conditions and 15 hospital beds for every 10,000 people in the country. There are 34 hospitals and 188 health centers in this tiny country, so the traveler has some access to treatment. Cholera and yellow fever inoculations are required. Tetanus, polio, typhoid and gamma globulin vaccines are advised, as are antimalarial prophylaxes: DPT, measles and mumps vaccines are recommended for children. Tap water is not potable.
