Vigilante attacks against folks acquitted of genocide charges are on the rise. Fortunately, not a lot of those charged end up free. At the end of 1997, 20 cleared genocide suspects were murdered in Butare after getting released from prison. In August 1998, vigilantes slaughtered 14 people 50 miles south of Kigali with machetes, hoes and knives who were alleged buddies or relatives of acquitted genocide suspect Emmanuel Gasana.
