02/01/43Germany's 6th Army surrendered to Soviet forces in Stalingrad.
05/02/45Berlin fell to the Soviets.
06/22/41German invasion of U.S.S.R.
07/02/96Yeltsin wins Soviet election.
08/19/91Failed coup attempt that symbolized the end of communism in Russia and the breakup of the Soviet Union. Violent demonstrations occurred in Moscow in August 1992, resulting in several deaths.
11/07/17Revolution Day, considered the most sacred day by Russian communists.
12/21/91Russia joined with 10 other former republics of the Soviet Union (which ceased to exist on December 25, 1991) in establishing the Commonwealth of Independent States. The Commonwealth was expected to have military and economic coordinating functions and would be headquartered in Minsk, Belarus.
12/25/91Mikhail Gorbachev resigned as president of the Soviet Union and transferred control of the Soviet nuclear arsenal to Russian President Boris Yeltsin. A few hours later, the United States recognized Russia as the successor state to the Soviet Union. These actions marked the end of the Soviet Union, 74 years after the Bolshevik revolution.
12/31/91President Bush recognized the independence of all 12 former Soviet republics and proposed the establishment of full diplomatic relations with six of them, including Russia. Russian President Yeltsin responded formally and positively on December 31, 1991, the date officially considered to be when the U.S. established formal diplomatic relations with Russia.
