A formidable and brutal Muslim insurgency group for a quarter-century is now a paper tiger. The MNLF signed a peace agreement with the Ramos government on September 2, 1996. Today, the MNLF is a mainstream political entity that has spawned the more militant MILF. Some 7,500 former guerrillas are now being trained and paid to fight alongside government troops to battle the even nastier MILF and the remnants of the Abu Sayyaf group. The former guerrillas get $170 and a monthly allowance of $30. The MNLF chairman, Nur Misuari is now in charge of a four province Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao. How long will the honeymoon last? Until the money stops flowing.
