Investigative journalists in the Philippines may want to consider forwarding their CVs to "Hard Copy," or just simply getting the hell out of the Philippines. On June 3, 1997, Danny Hernandez, news editor of the People's Journal Tonight-the country's most popular tabloid daily-was shot dead in a taxi cab. He is believed to have been assassinated for his anticrime reporting. Another anticrime journalist, Albert Berbon of radio station DZMM, was assassinated outside his home in December 1996. A leading anti-crime group then stated: "If a radio reporter of the caliber of Bert Berbon could be killed in Mafia fashion, then it would not be difficult to comprehend that an ordinary Filipino citizen could be killed any time by people who wish them harm."
