More than 10,000 firefights between government soldiers and rebel separatists as well as countless bombings and other politically motivated slayings have left 50,000 people dead over the last 30 years in the Philippines, most of them on the island of Mindanao. Sultan Kudarat is particularly dangerous. Government soldiers are regularly attacked by MILF guerrillas in this area, and surrounding parcels of land change hands regularly. Dangerous as well is Zamboanga, where a wave of bombing attacks by ASG terrorists rattled the city for six days in March 1996.
