Led by Afaq Ahmed, the group was getting a bit irritated with the authoritarian style of Altaf Hussein. So far, so bad. But things really got out of hand when military intelligence (a misnomer if ever there was one) decided to arm the splinter groups as a counterbalance to the mainstream MQM. The end result? A low level war between the rival factions when they weren't busy popping off soldiers and policemen. No, it wasn't the smartest move the military ever made.
