As of the beginning of 1995, the Mohajirs are the principal disturbers in the Karachi area. The Mohajirs are Urdu-speaking Muslim immigrants who came here from India after the partition between Pakistan and India in 1947. Their political/military group, the Mohajir National Movement (MQM) (founded in 1986) is directly battling police and strong-arming locals. There are six major political and religious groups in Karachi. In total, they have 1,000 armed guerrillas and snipers operating at any one time.
