A passport and visa are required. The visa must be obtained from a Pakistani embassy or consulate before arrival at the point of entry. Information on entry requirements can be obtained from the embassy of Pakistan or the Pakistani consulate general. There is a $20 fee for the visa and a $10 fee for rush delivery. Business visitors and tourists are required to carry a valid Pakistan visa in their passports that must be obtained prior to entry. Pakistani requirements to legally cross the country's borders are different for each nationality. U.S. citizens must have a visa issued by a Pakistani consulate as well as a valid U.S. passport. Make sure you apply for your visa in the country of your residence, since you will be told that only the embassy in your home city or country can issue visas.
Do not bring in alcohol: it will be confiscated. Crossing from Afghanistan officially is forbidden for foreigners, although many of the remote tribal areas do not observe any immigration formalities. Currently, the Afghanistan-Pakistan border is closed, but it is easy to sneak across-if you don't mind the mines, the bandits and are a fully qualified mountaineer. Only UN personnel, locals, aid agencies and journos (with the right Taliban visa) are allowed to cross the border officially. The Iranian border can be crossed using weekly train service (Zahedan-Quetta), or by a painfully slow 22-hour bus trip (Taftan-Quetta). Folks who like avoiding those messy passport stamps can expect to be arrested and discover the joys of the local prisons.
You can enter from China via the efficient, but weather-sensitive Karakoram Highway. The road is open from May 1-November 30 if Mother Nature obliges. The route continues to the famous trading town of Kashgar, but the bus ride will test the stamina and intestines of any traveler. Coming in from India is via train (Lahore-Wagh) or a four-hour bus ride (Lahore-Amritsar) but subject to closure due to Sikh attacks. Check with the government or the embassy for exact restrictions and closures. The only land border crossing with India is Amritsar.
