The Punjab Province has been the site of numerous bomb blasts occurring at cinemas, marketplaces and other public areas. A professional criminal element exists in the Punjab (operating mainly in the interior), with kidnapping for ransom, robbery and burglaries all being carried out by gangs of professional criminals. There are frequent armed clashes between Pakistani and Indian army groups along the border area and in east Punjab and particularly in the disputed territory of Kashmir. Lahore is placid but famous for rip-offs of tourists in cheap hotels, bogus traveler's checks and other tourist crime.
