Nigeria's taking a cue from South Africa; President Olusegun Obasanjo has established a Truth Commission to investigate assassination and other human rights abuses in Nigeria since 1994. Like a Dallas rerun, don't expect a lot of people to tell the truth, or even stick around to lie for that matter. More than 40 two-star generals have so far been bounced by Obasanjo. Two hundred other high-ranking officers are also expected to be sacked. One man Obasanjo is certain to subpoena is Lieutenant Colonel Frank Omenka, the former director of military intelligence under Sani Abacha's regime. "Colonel Terror," as Omenka is popularly known, didn't even dare show up at small claims court in June 1999 over a property dispute. Think he'll pull a P. W. Botha? Obasanjo has vowed to purge the military of all but "apolitical officers," which in Nigeria is an oxymoron.
