The Ogoni people are a small minority in Nigeria-perhaps numbering 500,000-but Abacha systematically raped their oil-rich land, and, of course, the Ogonis have nothing to show for it. So when Ken Saro-Wiwa decided to champion the group's rights, he and eight of his buddies were promptly executed by the government. Nigeria was suspended from the Commonwealth (which is like getting a bimonthly bye in the weekly bridge club), and Britain-in protest-recalled its ambassador, who was back in his Lagos digs by the middle of January 1996, only a couple of months after Saro-Wiwa was hanged and Abacha had his wrists slapped by the West. Now, it's back to the business of pumping for petrobucks. Hey, life goes on.
