Oil accounts for 90 percent of Nigeria's foreign exchange and most of it is getting pumped out by Royal Dutch Shell. Shell's been catching a lot of flak from bleeding heart groups-from human rights lobbies to environmentalists. Some of it's deserved, some isn't. Shell has also been dissed for offering too few jobs to local folks, but also lauded for having pressured the government to develop the area. Nigeria sits atop a confirmed 20 billion barrels of oil. Shell (Nigeria Shell) accounts for half of the government's income. So what's the big deal about the unexplained loss of a few billion dollars here or there? On the other hand, the oil giant is involved in a US$3.6 billion liquefied natural gas project that's gotten a clean slate from the green crowd and can only be for the welfare of all Nigerians. Militant activities, including ethnic strife between Ijaw and Itsekiri tribesmen, have been on the increase in the oil-producing Niger River Delta, forcing Shell to reduce its output.
