Many petty and violent crimes committed against foreigners are performed by bandits dressed in police or military uniforms. Bandits regularly murder foreigners without provocation. As well, foreigners are frequently robbed, assaulted and/or killed by legitimate police officers and soldiers, who are never reprimanded or punished by the government. Pickpockets and confidence artists, some posing as local immigration and other government officials, are especially common at Murtala Muhammad Airport. In addition to harassment and shakedowns of American citizens by officials at airports and throughout Nigeria, there have been reports of violent attacks by purported government officials on Americans and other foreigners.
