Chief K. O. Abiola won the 1993 democratic elections fair and square. When he was imprisoned and charged with treason by Abacha for declaring himself president, it sent a clear message that politics is not a healthy career choice in Nigeria. Former President General Olusegun Obasanjo is cooling his heels in the clink for his two coup attempts against Abacha, and there are an estimated 43 dissidents sharing his cell. On March 16, 1996, Nigeria held elections for 593 local councils, but the government prohibited members of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni Peoples--the anti-government group Ken Saro-Wiwa championed--from running. On March 21, 1996, Abacha signed a law permitting the military junta to dismiss any local councilman without cause.
