The capital is a free-for-all, plagued by acute crime. Violent crime committed in broad daylight is the norm, and foreigners are particularly targeted and sometimes murdered for no reason. Shakedowns, muggings, carjackings, robberies, assaults, armed break-ins and even murders are frequently committed by uniformed police and soldiers in the capital. The Nigerian government has not heeded urgent U.S. embassy requests for the perpetrators to be disciplined. Unlike other coconut coalitions in the Third World, Nigeria possesses a capital city that is every bit as dangerous as the countryside.
