Nigeria and Cameroon have been duking it out in the disputed Bakassi Peninsula, where the two nations have long been at odds. Since February 1994, the armed forces of the two nations have frequently clashed in the peninsula, a series of impoverished islands in the oil-rich Gulf of Guinea, which each claims to be its territory. Elf-Sarepca, the Cameroonian unit of France's Elf-Aquitaine, and several other oil firms are exploring for crude oil there and just south of the islands.
